A delicate eighteenth-century topographical print by Johann Ludwig Aberli, featuring the Pont de Thiele near Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland.
Johann Ludwig Aberli, a Swiss painter and engraver, is recognised for his contributions to the development of the 'Aberli style', a method of combining etching with hand-applied watercolour. This technique allowed for the mass production of topographical views that retained the delicate appearance of original drawings. His work was highly sought after by travellers on the Grand Tour, who collected these prints as souvenirs of the Swiss countryside.
This particular print depicts the Pont de Thiele near Lake Neuchâtel. The composition is characteristic of Aberli's approach, featuring a clear, balanced arrangement of the bridge, the surrounding architecture, and the water. The covered wooden bridge, a common feature in Swiss engineering of the period, spans the river with structural precision. To the right, the stone fortifications provide a sense of historical context, while the soft, muted tones of the watercolour wash create a sense of atmospheric depth. The sky is rendered with minimal detail, allowing the focus to remain on the architectural elements and the calm surface of the water.
Aberli's prints are noted for their clarity and technical restraint. He avoided excessive ornamentation, preferring to document the geography and structures of his native Switzerland with accuracy. The fine lines of the etching provide the framework for the image, while the watercolour adds a layer of naturalism without obscuring the underlying draughtsmanship. This print serves as a record of the region's infrastructure and aesthetic character during the late eighteenth century, reflecting the period's interest in documenting European topography for an international audience. The work remains a fine example of the intersection between technical printmaking and artistic observation.
