A detailed nineteenth-century engraving by Dirk Jurriaan Sluyter depicting the historic Amsterdam stock exchange as it appeared in 1613.
This print by Dirk Jurriaan Sluyter depicts the rear view of the Beurs van Hendrick de Keyser, the original Amsterdam stock exchange, as it appeared in 1613. The building, designed by the architect Hendrick de Keyser, was a significant structure in the early seventeenth-century Dutch Golden Age. Sluyter, a Dutch engraver active in the nineteenth century, captures the architectural precision of the structure, including its distinctive tower and gabled roofline, which were characteristic of the period.
The composition focuses on the canal-side perspective, showing the exchange building positioned behind a stone bridge. The water in the foreground is populated with small sailing vessels, reflecting the maritime nature of Amsterdam during the seventeenth century. The sky is rendered with soft, atmospheric shading, providing a sense of depth and scale to the urban scene. Sluyter employs fine lines to delineate the masonry and the rigging of the ships, demonstrating a high level of technical skill in the medium of engraving.
This work serves as a historical record of Amsterdam's urban development. By choosing to depict a specific moment from the past, the artist engages with the nineteenth-century interest in historical reconstruction and the preservation of national identity through visual media. The print provides a clear view of the architectural details of the Beurs, which was demolished in the nineteenth century, making this an important reference for the study of Dutch architectural history. The balance between the solid, static architecture and the fluid, moving water creates a harmonious scene that is typical of topographical prints from this era. The work is presented with a clean, minimalist aesthetic, allowing the viewer to appreciate the technical execution of the engraving process.
