A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting travellers at the Fukoroi station along the historic Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the station of Fukoroi, one of the stops along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. Hokusai produced this series during the early nineteenth century, capturing the daily movement of travellers across the Japanese countryside. The composition features a group of pedestrians navigating a path, their forms rendered with clear, economical lines typical of the artist's approach to genre scenes.
The scene is structured around a large, gnarled tree on the left, which provides a vertical anchor for the composition. The rolling hills are depicted with simplified, rounded shapes, while horizontal bands of colour suggest the atmosphere and distance. Hokusai employs a restrained palette, using soft greens, ochre yellows, and muted pinks to define the terrain and the sky. The figures are shown in various states of travel, carrying packs and wearing traditional conical hats, reflecting the common sights of the Tokaido route.
Unlike the more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, which often focused on dramatic weather or specific seasonal conditions, Hokusai's interpretation of the Tokaido stations frequently emphasises the human element and the rhythmic nature of the journey. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clean registration of the colour blocks and a balanced distribution of visual weight. The work provides a view into the travel culture of the Edo period, documenting the attire, equipment, and social interactions of those who traversed the major arteries of Japan. This print is a representative example of Hokusai's ability to distil complex scenes into clear, readable graphic compositions, maintaining a sense of order and clarity throughout the image.
