A detailed study by George Stubbs featuring a gamekeeper, a hound, and a doe, rendered with the artist's signature anatomical precision.
George Stubbs, a painter celebrated for his anatomical precision and mastery of animal subjects, produced this work towards the end of his career. The painting depicts Freeman, a gamekeeper in the service of the Earl of Clarendon, positioned within a woodland setting. Stubbs focuses on the interaction between the human figure, the alert hound, and the fallen doe. His approach to the subject is characteristic of his broader body of work, which often combined portraiture with the realities of rural life and field sports.
The composition is structured around the central figure of the gamekeeper, who kneels to attend to the doe. The hound, rendered with the anatomical accuracy that defined Stubbs's reputation, stands to the left, its posture suggesting a state of heightened attention. The background consists of a dark, atmospheric forest, which serves to isolate the figures and draw the viewer's eye to the foreground action. The lighting is controlled, casting a soft glow on the subjects while allowing the surrounding foliage to recede into shadow.
Stubbs spent years studying the skeletal and muscular structures of animals, a discipline that informs the way he captures the tension in the hound's frame and the stillness of the doe. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured romanticised depictions of the hunt, Stubbs presents a more clinical observation of the scene. The inclusion of the fowling piece resting on the ground provides a narrative context for the activity, grounding the image in the practicalities of the gamekeeper's profession. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts and the precise brushwork of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of the artist's technical rigour and his ability to balance human and animal subjects within a single frame.
