A study of oak trees in the Forest of Fontainebleau, painted by Camille Corot during the 1830s.
Camille Corot painted this study of oak trees in the Forest of Fontainebleau during the early 1830s. The work reflects the practices of the Barbizon School, a group of artists who moved away from the studio to observe nature directly. Corot spent significant time in this region, capturing the specific light and textures of the French countryside.
The composition focuses on a cluster of sturdy oaks set against a clear blue sky. Corot uses a palette of earthy browns, ochres, and deep greens to render the forest floor and the dense foliage. The brushwork is direct and unadorned, showing the artist's interest in the physical reality of the trees rather than an idealised version of the woods. The light filters through the canopy, creating distinct shadows on the rocky, uneven ground. This approach to painting outdoors allowed Corot to study the effects of natural light, which informed his later, more atmospheric works.
Unlike the grand historical scenes popular in the French Academy, this piece is a modest observation of a specific location. The inclusion of large boulders and the rugged texture of the bark suggest a focus on the raw, untamed character of the forest. The sky, punctuated by a single cloud, provides a sense of scale and openness. This work remains a clear example of the transition toward plein-air painting in the nineteenth century. It captures a quiet moment in the forest, free from narrative or allegorical content. The focus is entirely on the relationship between the light, the trees, and the earth.
