A dreamlike 1977 composition by Marc Chagall, featuring a woman with a bouquet atop a horse against a warm, expressive village background.
Marc Chagall created this work in 1977, during the final decade of his career. The composition features a central female figure, the fiancée, who stands atop a horse. She holds a large, textured bouquet of flowers. The background depicts a village scene, a recurring motif in the artist's work that draws upon his memories of Vitebsk.
Chagall employs a dreamlike visual language. A violinist plays to the left, while a figure floats in the upper portion of the canvas. The colour palette is dominated by a warm, intense orange-red, which contrasts with the cool blue tones of the woman's dress and the floating figure. This juxtaposition creates a sense of separation between the earthly village life and the ethereal, imaginative realm the artist frequently explored.
The application of paint is loose and expressive. Forms are not strictly defined, allowing the figures to merge with the surrounding atmosphere. The horse, a symbol often used by Chagall to represent freedom or memory, provides a grounding element for the central figure. The inclusion of a crescent moon and small, schematic houses reinforces the folk-art quality of the piece.
This work reflects the artist's preoccupation with themes of love, memory, and nostalgia. By combining personal iconography with a non-naturalistic approach to space and scale, Chagall invites the viewer into a subjective narrative. The painting avoids rigid perspective, opting instead for a flattened, decorative arrangement that prioritises emotional resonance over physical accuracy. It remains a characteristic example of his late period, where his established visual vocabulary continued to inform his exploration of human connection and memory.
