A study of atmospheric light and colour, this abstract work by Jane Wilson captures the shifting tones of the horizon at dusk.
Jane Wilson, an American painter associated with the later stages of the New York School, developed a distinct approach to the depiction of light and atmosphere. Her work often occupies the space between representation and abstraction, focusing on the sensory experience of the horizon line. In this piece, the composition is divided into horizontal bands of colour, suggesting the transition of light during the evening hours.
Wilson utilised a soft, painterly technique, applying pigment in layers that allow for subtle shifts in tone and texture. The absence of specific topographical markers forces the viewer to engage with the colour relationships themselves. The upper registers feature warm, golden hues that suggest the final glow of the sun, while the lower sections transition into cooler blues and purples, mimicking the encroaching shadows of dusk.
Her practice was informed by her surroundings, particularly the coastal environment of Long Island. Rather than documenting a specific location, she aimed to capture the ephemeral quality of the sky and the way light interacts with the atmosphere. The brushwork is loose and gestural, avoiding hard edges to maintain a sense of fluidity. This approach creates a meditative quality, inviting the viewer to observe the subtle modulations of colour across the surface of the canvas. By stripping away narrative elements, Wilson directs attention to the physical properties of paint and the emotional resonance of light. This work reflects her interest in the atmospheric conditions of the natural world, rendered through a lens of abstraction that prioritises mood over precise detail.
