A detailed engraving by Francesco Faraone Aquila depicting the legendary meeting between Pope Leo I and Attila the Hun, based on Raphael's Vatican fresco.
This print by Francesco Faraone Aquila depicts the legendary encounter between Pope Leo I and Attila the Hun. The composition is based on the fresco by Raphael in the Stanza di Eliodoro within the Vatican. Aquila, a skilled engraver active in Rome during the early eighteenth century, captures the dramatic narrative through precise line work and tonal variation.
The scene is framed within a semi-circular arch, mirroring the architectural setting of the original fresco. To the left, Pope Leo I stands with his retinue, gesturing towards the sky. Above him, the figures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul appear in the clouds, brandishing swords to intimidate the invading army. To the right, Attila and his mounted warriors recoil in terror, their horses rearing in confusion. The contrast between the calm, authoritative presence of the papal party and the chaotic movement of the Huns defines the visual tension of the work.
Aquila employs a range of hatching techniques to model the figures and the surrounding terrain. The depth of the scene is managed through the placement of the horses and the receding landscape in the background. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides historical context, identifying the event as the miraculous intervention that saved Rome from destruction. This print serves as a record of the influence of High Renaissance compositions on later printmakers, who sought to disseminate these grand narratives to a wider audience. The technical execution reflects the standards of Roman printmaking during the period, prioritising clarity of form and narrative legibility. The work remains a fine example of how classical themes were translated into the medium of engraving for collectors and scholars of the era.
