A detailed architectural study of the Clivus Scauri in Rome, rendered in pen and brown ink by the Flemish master Tobias Verhaecht.
This drawing by Tobias Verhaecht captures the Clivus Scauri in Rome, a site that drew many Northern European artists during the late sixteenth century. Verhaecht, known for his work in Antwerp and his role as a teacher to Peter Paul Rubens, demonstrates a keen interest in the structural remains of antiquity. The composition focuses on the repetitive rhythm of the brick arches, which recede into the distance to create a sense of depth.
The artist employs a calligraphic pen technique to define the weathered textures of the masonry and the surrounding vegetation. The use of brown ink and wash provides a tonal range that suggests the play of light and shadow across the ancient ruins. Rather than producing a rigid architectural record, Verhaecht imbues the scene with a sense of atmospheric presence. The sketch reflects the broader interest among Flemish painters in the Italian environment, where the juxtaposition of classical ruins and natural growth became a common subject for study.
This work provides insight into the preparatory methods of the period, where artists recorded observations during their travels to inform later studio compositions. The lines are fluid, showing the artist's confidence in capturing the scale of the Roman structures. The focus remains on the structural integrity of the arches, with the wash applied to suggest the weight and age of the stone. This piece is a clear example of the draughtsmanship typical of the era, prioritising the observation of form and the translation of three-dimensional space onto a two-dimensional surface through ink and wash techniques.
