A striking 1904 etching by Anders Zorn, capturing the weathered features and stoic presence of a Dalecarlian peasant through masterful, economical line work.
Anders Zorn, a Swedish master of the etching medium, produced this portrait of a Dalecarlian peasant in 1904. The region of Dalarna held a special place in Zorn's artistic practice, as he frequently returned to his home province to document the local people and their traditional customs. This work captures a man with a weathered face, his features rendered through Zorn's characteristic economy of line.
The etching demonstrates Zorn's technical command over the copper plate. He employs a series of rapid, directional strokes to define the contours of the subject's face and the texture of his heavy winter clothing. The background is suggested through dense, vertical hatching, which pushes the figure forward and creates a sense of immediate presence. The inscription 'LAVRRDS ANDERS' appears at the top, identifying the sitter as a specific individual from the community.
Zorn's approach to portraiture avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the psychological weight of the sitter. The man's gaze is direct, conveying a sense of stoicism and quiet dignity. By stripping away extraneous elements, Zorn allows the viewer to engage with the raw character of the subject. The interplay between the light areas of the paper and the dark, etched lines creates a strong sense of volume and form. This print is a fine example of Zorn's ability to capture the essence of his subjects through minimal means, a skill that earned him international recognition during his lifetime. The work remains a clear representation of his interest in the rural life of Sweden at the turn of the twentieth century.
