A refined woodblock print by Chōkōsai Eishō depicting a courtesan and her attendant, capturing the grace and fashion of the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Chōkōsai Eishō depicts a high-ranking courtesan accompanied by her young attendant, a classic subject within the bijin-ga genre of the Edo period. Eishō, a student of Hosoda Eishi, became known for his refined portrayals of women in the Yoshiwara pleasure district. His figures often possess elongated proportions and a sense of poise that distinguishes his work from the more robust styles of his contemporaries.
The composition balances the standing figure of the courtesan, whose elaborate kimono features a repeating floral pattern, with the kneeling maid who looks up towards her mistress. The interaction between the two figures suggests a quiet moment of service or instruction. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the folds of the garments and the intricate hairstyles adorned with hairpins. A vertical cartouche containing calligraphy is positioned to the left, balanced by the floral motif, which provides a decorative element to the negative space.
The colour palette remains muted, relying on soft ochre, sage green, and pale pink tones typical of the late eighteenth-century printing techniques. The paper retains its aged, warm tone, which complements the subtle application of colour. This print reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the grace of the subject and the technical skill of the printmaker were held in high regard. By focusing on the fashion and posture of the women, Eishō captures the specific cultural atmosphere of the urban pleasure quarters. The print serves as a record of the sartorial trends and social hierarchies present in Japanese society during the late Edo era, presented through the lens of traditional woodblock printing methods.
