A seminal work of Synchromism, this abstract painting uses rhythmic, curved planes of saturated colour to explore the relationship between light and form.
Morgan Russell, alongside Stanton Macdonald-Wright, developed the movement known as Synchromism in Paris during the early twentieth century. This approach to painting prioritised the use of colour as the primary vehicle for form and space, rather than relying on traditional line or chiaroscuro. The artists drew inspiration from the theories of colour harmony, often comparing the arrangement of hues to the structure of musical compositions.
Cosmic Synchromy displays the characteristic application of this theory. The canvas is organised through a series of overlapping, curved planes that suggest a sense of rotation or orbital motion. Russell employs a palette of saturated oranges, deep blues, and greens, which are applied in distinct, rhythmic strokes. These blocks of colour interact to create a sense of volume and depth without the need for representational subject matter. The composition avoids a single centre, instead encouraging the eye to move across the surface, following the arcs and colour transitions.
This work reflects the broader interest among early modernists in the relationship between visual art and abstract concepts like light, energy, and cosmic order. By stripping away the figurative elements, Russell focuses the viewer on the physical properties of the paint and the psychological impact of colour relationships. The application of pigment is deliberate, with visible brushwork that maintains the texture of the oil medium. This piece remains a primary example of the American contribution to early European abstraction, demonstrating a rigorous application of colour theory to achieve a sense of movement and spatial complexity on a two-dimensional surface.
