A 1963 oil painting by Richard Diebenkorn, capturing the geometric structure and light of the Californian landscape through a modernist lens.
Cityscape I, painted by Richard Diebenkorn in 1963, represents a period in the artist's career where he moved away from pure abstraction to re-engage with the physical world. During this time, Diebenkorn lived in the Ocean Park neighbourhood of Santa Monica, and his work began to reflect the specific light and geometry of the Californian environment. This painting captures a view that is both recognisable and abstracted, focusing on the structural interplay between urban architecture and the surrounding terrain.
The composition is defined by strong, angular lines and a deliberate flattening of space. Diebenkorn uses broad, visible brushstrokes to construct the scene, prioritising the weight of the paint and the relationship between colour fields over precise detail. The palette consists of earthy tones, muted greens, and sharp greys, which mirror the dry, sun-drenched quality of the West Coast. The perspective is slightly elevated, allowing the viewer to observe the division between the built environment on the left and the open, undeveloped land on the right.
Diebenkorn's approach to this work demonstrates his interest in the tension between the two-dimensional surface of the canvas and the three-dimensional space he depicts. The shadows are rendered as solid, geometric shapes, which anchor the composition and provide a sense of structure. By simplifying the forms of the buildings and the ground, Diebenkorn directs attention to the formal qualities of the painting, such as the balance of light and the rhythm of the shapes. This piece is a representative example of his transition into the figurative style that defined his later output, showing a synthesis of his earlier abstract expressionist training with a renewed focus on observation.
