A 1576 drawing by Chrispijn van den Broeck depicting the Agony in the Garden, rendered in pen, ink, and wash.
This drawing by the Flemish artist Chrispijn van den Broeck depicts the biblical scene of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. Dated 1576, the work demonstrates the stylistic characteristics of Northern Mannerism, a period defined by elongated figures, complex spatial arrangements, and a focus on dramatic narrative. Van den Broeck employs a combination of pen and brown ink with brown wash over black chalk to create depth and volume within the composition.
In the centre, Christ kneels in prayer, his posture conveying a sense of resignation and spiritual weight. Above him, an angel appears, holding the instruments of the Passion, which serves to foreshadow the events to follow. In the foreground, the disciples are shown in various states of slumber, their heavy, draped garments rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines that define their forms against the rocky terrain. To the left, a group of soldiers approaches in the distance, adding a sense of impending tension to the quietude of the garden.
Van den Broeck was a versatile artist active in Antwerp, known for his work as a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. His ability to manage multiple figures within a single frame is evident here, as he balances the divine presence of the angel with the human vulnerability of the sleeping disciples. The use of wash provides a soft, atmospheric quality, allowing the light to model the figures and the surrounding environment. This piece offers a clear view into the technical proficiency of sixteenth-century Flemish draughtsmanship, where the economy of line and the application of tone work in tandem to articulate a complex theological narrative. The work remains a fine example of the period's approach to religious iconography, prioritising emotional resonance through careful anatomical and spatial construction.
