A modernist book cover design by Reijer Stolk for the works of Nescio, featuring a geometric, abstracted figure and clean typography.
This work presents a dual view of a graphic design project by the Dutch artist Reijer Stolk. The left side displays the preliminary graphite sketch, showing the structural layout and the geometric division of space. The right side reveals the final printed version, featuring the distinctive green ink application. The design serves as a cover for the collected works of the author Nescio, specifically including the titles Dichtertje, De Uitvreter, and Titaantjes.
Stolk employs a rigid, geometric approach characteristic of the early twentieth-century Dutch avant-garde. The figure is abstracted into vertical segments, echoing the influence of De Stijl and the search for universal order through primary forms. The typography is integrated into the composition, maintaining a balance between the verticality of the figure and the horizontal alignment of the text. The use of a single, muted green colour against a neutral background creates a clean, modernist aesthetic that prioritises clarity and structural integrity over decorative excess.
Reijer Stolk was a versatile artist, active in painting, graphic design, and sculpture. His work often reflects the tension between representational form and the drive toward abstraction that defined the period. This specific design demonstrates his ability to synthesise literary themes with a disciplined visual language. The composition is stripped of unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the relationship between the human silhouette and the architectural frame. By presenting both the preparatory study and the finished product, this print offers a rare insight into the technical process of a designer working within the constraints of early modern publishing. It is a piece that documents the intersection of Dutch literature and the visual arts during a period of significant aesthetic transition.
