A 1969 screenprint by Richard Hamilton, exploring the intersection of photographic source material and abstract graphic form.
Richard Hamilton, a central figure in the development of British Pop Art, produced Bathers (A) in 1969. This work demonstrates his fascination with the intersection of mass-media imagery and traditional fine art subjects. The composition is derived from a photograph, which Hamilton then manipulated through the screenprinting process to alter the visual information. By reducing the figures to high-contrast silhouettes against a textured, almost abstract water surface, he shifts the focus from the individual subjects to the mechanics of the image itself.
The colour palette is deliberately artificial, utilising shades of red, pink, and deep shadow to create a sense of distance from the original source material. Hamilton often explored how photographic reproduction changes the way viewers perceive reality. In this print, the water is rendered as a series of fragmented, repetitive marks that suggest movement while simultaneously flattening the pictorial space. The figures appear as ghostly, pale forms, their presence mediated by the printing process rather than direct observation.
This piece reflects Hamilton's analytical approach to art-making. He was interested in the way technology and commercial printing techniques could be repurposed to create new aesthetic experiences. By isolating the act of bathing, a classic theme in art history, and subjecting it to the rigours of modern printmaking, Hamilton invites the viewer to consider the gap between the captured moment and the final printed object. The work remains a clear example of his ability to bridge the divide between high art and the visual culture of the mid-twentieth century, maintaining a cool, detached perspective that avoids sentimentality while engaging with the viewer through its bold graphic qualities.
