A detailed eighteenth-century engraving by Jean Baptiste Michel depicting a historical encounter between King Alfred III of Mercia and William d'Albanac.
This engraving by Jean Baptiste Michel depicts a scene from the life of Alfred III, King of Mercia. The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century history painting, which often drew upon semi-legendary narratives to explore themes of power, nobility, and social hierarchy. The central figure of the King stands in a gesture of reception, while William d'Albanac presents his daughters to the monarch. The figures are rendered with the precise, controlled line work characteristic of the period's reproductive printmaking techniques.
Michel, a French engraver who spent much of his career in London, was frequently employed by publishers such as John Boydell to translate oil paintings into print form. This work demonstrates the technical rigour required to replicate the tonal values of a painted original using only the burin and etching needle. The drapery of the garments, the architectural setting, and the subtle modelling of the human form reflect the influence of the Neoclassical aesthetic, which favoured clarity, balance, and a return to classical ideals of proportion. The inclusion of a coat of arms and a formal dedication at the base of the print indicates its intended audience among the British aristocracy and the educated public of the era.
The scene is staged within a classical interior, framed by an archway and heavy curtains that provide a sense of theatrical depth. The interaction between the figures is formal and restrained, typical of the period's approach to narrative art. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow across the surfaces of the figures and the stone floor, the artist creates a sense of spatial volume. This print serves as a record of the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers in the late eighteenth century, a period when the dissemination of art through high-quality prints was essential for the reach of historical and literary subjects.
