A serene depiction of a shepherdess in the Italian countryside, captured with the loose, atmospheric brushwork characteristic of Henry Herbert La Thangue.
Henry Herbert La Thangue, a member of the New English Art Club, spent significant time in the Ligurian region of Italy during the early twentieth century. This work captures the quietude of rural life, focusing on a solitary shepherdess positioned against a sun-drenched hillside. The composition is anchored by a large, overhanging tree in the foreground, which provides a natural frame for the figure and the distant village perched upon the ridge.
La Thangue was known for his dedication to painting en plein air, a practice that allowed him to capture the specific quality of Mediterranean light. His brushwork is loose and tactile, building the texture of the grassy slope and the foliage through layered, broken colour. The shepherdess, dressed in a muted red garment, stands in a contemplative posture, her form integrated into the surrounding environment rather than separated from it. The sheep, partially obscured by the tree trunk, add a sense of scale and domesticity to the scene.
Unlike the more polished academic works of his contemporaries, La Thangue favoured a direct approach to his subjects. He often sought out the rhythms of agricultural labour and the simple existence of those living in the Italian countryside. The palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones: ochres, burnt umbers, and soft greens, which evoke the dry heat of the Ligurian climate. The sky is rendered in pale, atmospheric washes, suggesting the hazy brightness of a summer day. This print offers a view into the artist's interest in the intersection of human activity and the natural world, presented with a focus on light and atmosphere.
