River Landscape by Annibale Carracci

River Landscape

Samuel H. Kress Collection

This River Landscape belongs to the genre Carracci did more than any other painter of his generation to establish as a subject in its own right: pastoral countryside, ordered rather than picturesque, built from tranquil hills, gliding water and screens of trees rather than from a narrative scene requiring figures to carry it. Carracci's landscapes typically use architecture, a distant tower, a walled town, a bridge, to anchor the middle distance and lead the eye back through the composition, an approach later landscape painters including Domenichino and Nicolas Poussin took directly as their model. A river running through the composition is one of the recurring structural devices in this body of work, giving Carracci a way to organise recession through the placement of land and water rather than through strict linear perspective.

How Carracci built a landscape

Carracci's landscapes do not use the strict linear perspective common in earlier Renaissance painting. Instead he built a sense of depth through the placement of light and shadow and through terraces of land and water, set one above the other and narrowing as they recede, that guide the eye back toward architecture placed in the middle distance[1]. Walled towns, towers, temples and bridges recur across this body of work, giving otherwise open countryside a fixed point for the composition to organise itself around[1]. Screens of trees, dark against an even sky, typically frame the foreground[1].

From genre painter to landscape innovator

Carracci arrived at landscape by way of an earlier phase spent painting genre scenes of ordinary life in Bologna during the early 1580s, fishing and hunting subjects, low-life market scenes, and pictures of peasants eating and drinking[2]. By 1585 he had largely abandoned genre subjects in favour of devotional and history painting, but the observational habits built during those years, the willingness to treat an unglamorous, everyday scene as worth a large, carefully composed canvas, carried directly into his mature landscapes[2]. Later landscapists, notably Domenichino and Nicolas Poussin, treated Carracci's compositions as their immediate model for building an enclosed, staged landscape space, tracing the method back specifically to his work rather than to any single earlier tradition[3].

Common questions

  • What makes a Carracci landscape distinctive?

Carracci built depth through light, shadow and terraced recession rather than strict linear perspective, and anchored his compositions with architecture, a tower, bridge or walled town, placed in the middle distance.

  • Why is Carracci considered important to the history of landscape painting?

He was among the first painters to treat landscape as a subject worth a whole composition rather than background filler for a religious or mythological scene, and his method became the direct model for Domenichino and Nicolas Poussin a generation later.

  • What is the Samuel H. Kress Collection?

A large American collection of European paintings assembled in the first half of the twentieth century and later distributed to museums across the United States.
