Wilhelm Cornelis Bauer

Wilhelm Cornelis Bauer was a member of the Walden colony in Bussum, a utopian socialist experiment founded by Frederik van Eeden. He lived in a simple hut while designing some of the most imaginative architectural watercolours of the late nineteenth century. His involvement with the Walden colony reflected his belief that architecture should harmonise with a simpler way of life. Many of his watercolours depicted "Walhalla" or idealised buildings that were never intended for construction.

Biography

His style sits between the Amsterdam School and the broader Art Nouveau movement. Bauer used watercolour and Chinese ink to create atmospheric, dreamlike structures with steep roofs and organic forms. He focused on the emotional impact of space rather than technical feasibility. This approach allowed him to explore architectural fantasy without the constraints of traditional building materials.

Modern collectors value Bauer for his imaginary architecture and the way his drawings bridge the gap between fine art and design. His watercolours possess a quiet, contemplative mood that suits contemporary interiors. These pieces offer a look into the Tachtigers movement and the early Dutch avant-garde.
