Victor Adam

Victor Adam entered the École des Beaux-Arts at the age of thirteen. He was a pupil of Meynier and Regnault. While many of his contemporaries focused on oil painting, Adam became a master of the lithographic stone. He produced thousands of plates during his career. This volume of work was not a result of haste but of a technical facility that few could match. He was often commissioned to document large public events, such as the 1836 bicentenary of the Utrecht Hogeschool.

Biography

His work focuses on the anatomy and movement of horses. In Ruiter in galop and Twee wilde paarden, he captures the physical power of the animal without relying on romantic exaggeration. Adam used lithography to create soft tonal shifts that mimic the look of charcoal or chalk drawings. His compositions often place the subject against a minimal background. This approach directs the eye to the musculature and posture of the horse or rider.

Modern collectors value Adam for his technical precision and the clarity of his prints. His horse studies provide a sense of naturalism that fits well in contemporary interiors. The monochrome nature of many of his lithographs allows them to work in various decor styles. His portraits, such as that of Tsar Alexander II, offer a glimpse into nineteenth-century military aesthetics. These prints provide a connection to the history of natural history illustration and equestrian art.
