Samuel Bernard

Samuel Bernard began his career as a painter but found his greatest technical success through the precision of engraving. He was one of the original twelve elders who established the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1648. While his son became a financier to the French crown, the elder Bernard remained dedicated to the physical process of printmaking and miniature portraiture. He spent much of his life in Paris refining these skills.

Bernard developed a style that favoured clarity and structural rigour. He often translated large-scale oil paintings into smaller, detailed engravings. This process required him to simplify complex compositions into a series of fine lines and cross-hatching. His miniatures used a restrained colour palette. He focused on capturing the likeness of his subjects without unnecessary ornamentation. This technical discipline allowed him to produce work for the most prestigious circles in France.
