Kōno Bairei was a central figure in the Kyoto art world during the Meiji era. He helped establish several art schools in the city to preserve traditional techniques and promote the Nihonga style during a period of rapid social change. His 1881 publication, Bairei hyakuchō gafu (Album of One Hundred Birds), became one of the most successful woodblock print books of its time. This work featured a wide range of avian species and required multiple volumes to complete the series.
Biography
His style focused on the kacho-ga genre, which depicts birds and flowers with precision. Bairei used woodblock printing to replicate the subtle tonal shifts found in hand-painted watercolours. He moved away from the exaggerated forms of earlier ukiyo-e artists. Instead, he prioritised naturalistic observation and balanced compositions. His prints often use soft colour palettes and fine lines to define feathers and petals.
Modern collectors value Bairei for his ability to bring the natural world indoors. These prints offer a sense of calm through their orderly depiction of wildlife. The neutral backgrounds and soft tones make them suitable for contemporary interiors.
