Jean Zacherie Mazel
Jean Zacherie Mazel was a Swiss engraver who spent much of his career in Paris working alongside Pierre-Joseph Redouté. While history often credits Redouté alone for the botanical plates of the early nineteenth century, Mazel was the technical hand responsible for translating those watercolours into printed editions. He mastered the process of stipple engraving, a technique that used thousands of tiny dots to create soft gradations of colour.
