Jean-Baptiste Liotard

Jean-Etienne Liotard spent five years in Constantinople starting in 1738. He adopted local customs and wore Turkish dress. He also grew a long beard that became his trademark across European courts. This period defined his aesthetic and led to works like Turkish Woman with a Tambourine. He even owned personal curiosities like a Chinese lacquer gaming set with mother-of-pearl counters. He maintained this persona for years, even after returning to Western Europe.

Biography

Liotard was a master of pastel on parchment. He preferred a smooth, precise style that avoided visible brushwork. His portraits often included sitters with their possessions, such as Francois Tronchin shown with a Rembrandt painting. He used the powdery texture of pastel to create soft flesh tones. Before returning to Geneva, he travelled across Europe to paint Pope Clemens XIII and Empress Maria Theresia.

Modern collectors value the clarity of his work. His work lacks the heavy ornamentation common in other Rococo art. The Turquerie fashion he helped popularise offers a window into eighteenth-century interests in the exotic. His portraits feel immediate because of their technical accuracy. The direct gaze and clear lighting in his work suit both minimalist and classic decor.
