Hanna Nagel

Hanna Nagel was one of the few women to gain recognition within the New Objectivity movement during the Weimar Republic. While many of her contemporaries focused on urban expansion, Nagel turned her gaze toward the psychological domestic sphere. She earned the Rome Prize in 1933, a significant achievement for a female artist at the time. Her early work often featured self-portraits that examined the tension between her professional identity and social expectations.

Biography

Nagel favoured drawing and printmaking over oil painting. Her style relies on precise lines and a muted colour palette. She used pen and ink or watercolour to create compositions that feel both still and tense. Her subjects are frequently isolated figures in sparse rooms. This clarity of form defines her contribution to German Realism. She avoided decorative flourishes, choosing instead to focus on the weight of a gaze or the positioning of a hand.

Modern collectors find value in Nagel's unsentimental depiction of daily life. Her prints work well in contemporary interiors because of their graphic quality and restrained use of colour. Her subjects address themes of identity and personal space. This work offers a quiet and observational quality that contrasts with more aggressive modern styles. These prints provide a distinct addition to a home collection and document a specific period of European art.
