Fukae Roshū

Fukae Roshū was not a professional painter by birth or traditional training. His father, Fukae Shōzaemon, was a high-ranking official at the Ginza silver mint in Kyoto and a financial patron of the master Ogata Kōrin. This personal connection allowed Roshū to study the techniques of Kōrin closely without entering a formal apprenticeship. His status as a wealthy amateur gave him the freedom to interpret the Rimpa style with a specific kind of detachment.

Biography

The work of Fukae Roshū is defined by the Rimpa school preference for bold simplification. He used the tarashikomi technique, where wet paint is dropped into still-wet washes to create pooled colour effects. In his screens such as Ivy Lane and Mount Utsu from the Tales of Ise, he uses large areas of flat colour and abbreviated forms. He avoids fine detail in favour of graphic silhouettes. This approach creates a sense of space that is two-dimensional and rhythmic.

Modern collectors value Fukae Roshū for the graphic quality of his compositions. His paintings function as design as much as fine art. The lack of traditional perspective and the focus on bold, exaggerated shapes align with contemporary minimalist tastes. Prints of Ivy Lane or Mount Utsu provide a balance of historical narrative and abstract form. They suit modern interiors because they rely on strong geometry rather than realism.
