Fritz Rehm

Fritz Rehm began his career in Munich during the height of the Jugendstil movement. While many of his peers focused on traditional oil painting, Rehm found his niche in the commercial world. He became one of the most sought-after poster designers for the German tobacco and bicycle industries. His work for Victoria-Fahrräder and Jasmatzi cigarettes helped define the visual language of early twentieth-century advertising.

Biography

His technique relied on flat colour fields and strong, dark outlines. This style drew heavily from the Japanese woodblock prints that arrived in Europe at the time. Rehm avoided excessive detail. He preferred to use negative space to create balance. This approach made his posters legible from a distance, which was a necessity for street advertising. His figures often appear in profile, lending a statuesque quality to his compositions.

Modern collectors value Rehm for his graphic clarity. His work bridges the gap between fine art and functional design. The bold shapes and limited colour palettes work well in contemporary living spaces. These prints offer a sense of history without feeling cluttered or dated. They provide a clean, visual impact that suits minimalist interior design.
