François-Bernard Lépicié

François-Bernard Lépicié was far more than a printmaker. He held the post of Historiographer to the King and Perpetual Secretary of the Académie Royale. In 1752, he published a systematic catalogue of the French royal collection. This project was the first of its kind. It organised the paintings in the Louvre into a coherent record for the state. His administrative influence shaped the early development of art history in France.

Biography

His artistic practice centred on the translation of paintings into copperplate engravings. He worked closely with Jean-Siméon Chardin to reproduce scenes of everyday life. The print of The House of Cards is a primary example of this partnership. Lépicié prioritised tonal accuracy and structural clarity. He avoided unnecessary ornamentation. His technique ensured that the subtle moods of the original oils remained intact. This approach helped define the movement of 18th-century French engraving.

Collectors today seek his prints for their historical precision and formal balance. These works represent the intellectual rigour of the Enlightenment. They document the faces and fashions of the French court with factual detail. The portraits of figures like Louis de Boullogne and Charles Richter de Rodes de la Morlière provide a direct link to the 18th-century art world. These prints are valued for their clarity. They are a sophisticated addition to any collection of classical European art.
