Erin Corr

Erin Corr was an Irish engraver who became a leading figure in the Belgian art scene during the nineteenth century. While born in Brussels to Irish parents, he maintained strong ties to his heritage while mastering the burin. He eventually became a director at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His most ambitious project took ten years to complete: a large-scale engraving of Peter Paul Rubens's Descent from the Cross. This dedication to a single plate demonstrates the patience required for traditional printmaking.

Biography

Corr focused on the technical precision of line engraving. He worked primarily with copper and steel plates to reproduce the works of Old Masters. His technique involved building form through systematic hatching and cross-hatching. He avoided the looser styles of etching popular at the time. Instead, he sought a clean, architectural quality in his prints. This method allowed him to translate the heavy oils of Rubens or the delicate portraits of Van Dyck into a medium defined by black ink and white paper.

Modern collectors value Corr for the structural clarity of his compositions. His prints offer a monochromatic alternative to the busy colours of contemporary decor. The sharp contrast of his engravings suits minimalist interiors. These works provide a connection to the history of European printmaking without the visual clutter of more modern movements. His prints remain examples of technical skill that rely on the physical pressure of the hand against metal.
