Dirck Vellert

Dirck Vellert was primarily a master of stained glass before he turned his attention to engraving and etching. He held a prominent position in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, where he eventually became dean. During a visit to Antwerp in 1520, Albrecht Dürer recorded dining with Vellert, suggesting the high regard fellow artists held for his technical skill. This interaction influenced his later approach to printmaking.

Biography

His works often carry a distinctive monogram consisting of the letters DI separated by a five-pointed star. This mark appears on pieces such as Venus zeilend in een schelp and The Vision of St. Bernard. Vellert combined the precision of glass painting with the flexibility of copperplate etching. His compositions, including Christ Calling Peter and Andrew, demonstrate a clear sense of spatial organisation and anatomical detail.

Modern collectors value these prints for their clarity and historical position within the Northern Renaissance. The works provide a window into the transition from late Gothic styles to the more formalised structures of the sixteenth century. Pieces like Christ and the Woman of Samaria offer a balanced aesthetic that suits contemporary interiors. These prints remain accessible examples of early Netherlandish mastery.
