Daniel Lerpinière

Daniel Lerpinière began his career as an apprentice to the French-born engraver Francis Vivares. This connection gave him access to the techniques of the French school during a time when London was becoming the global centre for print production. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on portraits, Lerpinière specialised in reproducing large-scale paintings. He often worked on plates that required months of steady labour to complete.

Biography

His technique relied on a careful balance of etched lines and burin work. This method allowed him to translate the atmospheric qualities of oil paintings into monochrome prints. He is best known for his plates after Claude-Joseph Vernet and Jan Both. These works often feature maritime scenes or quiet pastoral settings. His skill lay in his ability to maintain clarity in the shadows without losing the sense of light.

Modern collectors value Lerpinière for his technical restraint. His prints offer a window into the eighteenth-century fascination with the natural world. The compositions are balanced and calm. They work well in contemporary interiors because they provide a sense of historical depth without being overly ornate. His prints after the Old Masters remain some of the most faithful translations of those works ever produced in England.
