Cornelis Buys

Cornelis Buys I operated a busy workshop in Alkmaar during the early sixteenth century. Most historians identify him as the Master of Alkmaar. This artist was the brother of Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen, a well-known figure in Northern Netherlandish art. Buys taught Jan van Scorel, who eventually introduced Italianate styles to the Northern Netherlands. His studio produced the Seven Works of Mercy for the Church of Saint Lawrence. These panels are a notable example of early Dutch painting.

Biography

His approach combined late Gothic traditions with an emerging interest in spatial depth. He used clear arrangements and focused on narrative logic. Figures in his paintings often possess distinct features. He favoured a palette of cool blues and muted earthy tones. The buildings in his backgrounds show a developing understanding of perspective. His style is characterised by a directness that avoids unnecessary decoration.

Collectors today appreciate these works for their historical detail and balanced structure. The images offer a view of the daily life and social customs of the sixteenth-century Netherlands. His rendering of textiles and household items is exact. These prints suit rooms that require a sense of history and quiet order. The steady compositions provide a calm presence in a modern home.
