Carlo Raimondi

Carlo Raimondi began his career under the guidance of Paolo Toschi at the Academy of Fine Arts in Parma. He eventually took over the school of engraving there in 1854. While many artists sought original compositions, Raimondi dedicated much of his life to the translation of existing masterpieces into copperplate prints. He spent years documenting the frescoes of Correggio and Parmigianino. This work ensured these fragile pieces could be studied by a wider audience through his prints.

Biography

His technique relies on a mastery of the burin and etching needle. Raimondi achieved a soft quality through dense networks of fine lines. In works such as Venus and a Satyr, he managed to replicate the subtle gradations of light and shadow found in Renaissance oils. His portraits, including those of his mentor Toschi, demonstrate a focus on anatomical accuracy and steady handwork. This approach required months of physical labour for a single plate.

Modern collectors value these prints for their technical clarity and historical weight. They represent a period when the reproduction of art was a high craft. These engravings provide a formal, structured look that suits many different interiors. The monochrome palette of his etchings allows the viewer to focus on the composition and the physical skill of the engraver.
