Anna Folkema

Anna Folkema was born into a family of skilled artisans in Amsterdam. Her father was a goldsmith and she worked closely with her brother Jan Jacob. Many female artists of the eighteenth century focused on still life or domestic scenes. Folkema instead produced technical engravings of civic architecture. Her series on the buildings of Amsterdam provides a precise record of the city during the Dutch Enlightenment.

Biography

Folkema’s technique relied on clear lines and an objective perspective. Her works, such as the views of the Stadsbank van Lening and the Kistenmakerspand, avoid dramatic lighting. She prioritised clarity. She often depicted the functional side of the city including brokerage offices and pawnshops. Her portraits of figures like Nicolaas Verkolje show a similar restraint. She focused on the structural integrity of her subjects rather than decorative flourishes.

Collectors today value Folkema for her architectural precision and historical documentation. Her prints capture the orderly character of Amsterdam before modern expansion. These works suit contemporary interiors that prefer clean lines and monochrome palettes. They offer a window into the urban history of the Netherlands through the eyes of a rare female engraver of the period.
