Alphonse Leroy

Alphonse Leroy spent much of his career working with the Wicar collection in Lille. Leroy focused on reproducing the drawings of Old Masters such as Raphael and Michelangelo. Unlike many engravers who sought to add their own flair, Leroy aimed for absolute fidelity to the original drawings. Leroy used a process that captured the specific texture of charcoal and red chalk on paper.

Biography

His approach relied on a technical mastery of the burin and etching needle. Leroy avoided heavy, dark masses of ink. Leroy used fine lines to suggest volume and light. This method preserved the airy quality of the Italian Renaissance drawings he studied. The prints often look like original drawings because Leroy understood how to translate the pressure of a pencil into a metal plate.

Modern collectors value these prints for their clean, monochrome aesthetic. These prints offer a way to own classical compositions without the heaviness of oil paintings. These prints suit contemporary spaces that prioritise light and clarity. The prints provide a direct connection to the history of drawing through a refined 19th-century lens.
