A classic Op Art screenprint by Victor Vasarely, featuring a geometric arrangement of black dots that create a kinetic illusion of depth.
Victor Vasarely is widely recognised as the father of the Op Art movement. His work focuses on the manipulation of geometric forms to create illusions of movement and depth on a two-dimensional surface. This specific print demonstrates his systematic approach to visual perception. By arranging black circles and semi-circles against a white ground, Vasarely creates a rhythmic structure that appears to shift as the viewer moves.
The composition relies on the precise placement of positive and negative space. The grid-like arrangement of dots is interrupted by shifts in orientation, which generate the appearance of recessed or protruding squares. This technique forces the eye to reconcile the flat nature of the paper with the perceived three-dimensional volume. Vasarely believed that art should be accessible and universal, often utilising industrial processes like screenprinting to produce his works. This allowed for a high degree of mathematical accuracy and consistency in his output.
Throughout his career, Vasarely explored the relationship between colour, shape, and light. While he often worked with a full spectrum, his black and white compositions remain his most direct investigations into the mechanics of human vision. The stark contrast between the ink and the paper removes any distraction, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the kinetic energy generated by the geometric arrangement. This piece is a clear example of his methodology, where the artist acts as a designer of visual experiences rather than a traditional painter. The work functions as a study in order and perception, reflecting his interest in the scientific principles of optics and the potential for art to engage the viewer in an active, rather than passive, manner.
