Description
A serene depiction of three figures by Le Pho, showcasing his signature blend of traditional silk painting techniques and modern composition.
Le Pho, a central figure in the development of modern Vietnamese art, created this work during his career in France. The composition depicts three women in a state of repose, rendered with the soft, fluid lines characteristic of his work on silk. The figures are arranged in a gentle, rhythmic grouping, their forms defined by subtle gradations of tone rather than harsh outlines.
Le Pho studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine in Hanoi before moving to Paris in 1937. His practice synthesised traditional Vietnamese silk painting techniques with European aesthetic sensibilities. This work demonstrates his interest in the human form, presented with a sense of quietude and grace. The palette remains restrained, favouring earthy tones and muted washes that allow the texture of the silk to remain visible beneath the pigment.
In this piece, the artist avoids rigid perspective, opting instead for a flattened, decorative arrangement that prioritises the harmony of the figures within their environment. The inclusion of foliage in the foreground provides a sense of depth while maintaining the overall balance of the composition. The figures, with their elegant postures and flowing garments, reflect the artist's focus on capturing a serene, timeless atmosphere. By blending Eastern medium traditions with Western compositional structures, Le Pho created a distinct visual language that remains recognisable for its lyrical quality and technical precision. This print captures the delicate nuances of the original silk surface, preserving the soft transitions and the specific colour palette chosen by the artist.
