Beschrijving
A seminal 1927 Surrealist work by René Magritte, featuring a detached, theatrical scene that subverts traditional crime narrative tropes.
The Menaced Assassin, painted in 1927, is a seminal work from the early period of René Magritte. It depicts a scene that defies conventional narrative logic, a hallmark of the artist's approach to the medium. In a sterile, room-like space, a man in a suit stands calmly listening to a gramophone, seemingly indifferent to the presence of a nude woman lying dead on a sofa behind him. Two men in bowler hats wait in the doorway, armed with a club and a net, while three heads peer through a window in the background.
Magritte employs a detached, almost clinical application of paint to render these bizarre elements. The composition is staged with the precision of a theatrical set, yet the spatial relationships remain ambiguous. The figures are rendered with a smooth, flat quality that removes the emotional weight typically associated with such a violent subject. By placing these disparate objects and figures together, Magritte forces the viewer to confront the absurdity of the scene rather than seeking a rational explanation.
The work draws upon the influence of pulp fiction and cinema, particularly the crime thrillers popular during the 1920s. Magritte subverts these tropes by stripping away the tension, leaving behind a static, dreamlike tableau. The stark lighting and the lack of texture contribute to the sense of alienation that permeates the canvas. This painting remains a primary example of how Magritte used ordinary objects and figures to create a sense of unease, questioning the nature of reality and the way images communicate meaning to the observer.

The Menaced Assassin - René Magritte
Artist Biography
Rene Magritte
He grew up in Lessines, Belgium. His mother drowned herself in the River Sambre when he was thirteen; her body was found with her nightdress wrapped around her face. Whether this explains the recurring covered faces in his paintings is a question biographers have insisted on and Magritte consistently refused to answer.
He studied at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and spent several years working as a commercial artist and wallpaper designer. The commercial work is relevant: his painting technique is deliberately flat, illustrative, and impersonal. There are no visible brushstrokes, no evidence of struggle. The surfaces look like advertisements for impossible things. He painted in a small room in his house, wearing a suit, with his easel next to the living room furniture.
He was a Surrealist but not the Parisian variety. He disliked Breton's intellectualising and preferred to work from home in Brussels. His version of Surrealism was cooler and more logical: ordinary objects placed in wrong contexts, familiar things made strange through simple displacement. A rock floating in the sky. An apple covering a face. A train emerging from a fireplace. Each painting poses a single visual problem and leaves you to solve it.
He made relatively few paintings compared to his contemporaries. Each one is self-contained. He did not develop through phases or wrestle with form. He found his approach early and refined it quietly for decades.
