A surrealist study by Roberto Matta, featuring fluid, biomorphic forms rendered in coloured pencil to explore psychological and biological themes.
Roberto Matta, a Chilean architect and painter, produced this work during his early period in Paris, where he became associated with the Surrealist movement. The composition reflects his interest in the intersection of biological forms and psychological states. Matta often referred to these works as 'psychological morphologies', aiming to map the internal architecture of the human mind through fluid, non-representational imagery.
The drawing features a series of interconnected, organic structures that suggest cellular or cosmic growth. Thin, calligraphic lines define the boundaries of these forms, while the application of coloured pencil creates a sense of depth and texture. The palette consists of warm ochres, deep purples, and muted greens, applied with varying pressure to suggest light and shadow. The central, spiky, spherical form acts as a nucleus, surrounded by branching, root-like appendages that extend across the paper.
Matta's technique involves a layering of marks, where fine hatching creates a sense of atmosphere against the pale background. The composition avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a floating, weightless arrangement that suggests a microscopic or extraterrestrial environment. This work demonstrates his departure from the rigid structures of his architectural training, moving toward a more intuitive and fluid mode of expression. The absence of a fixed horizon line encourages the viewer to interpret the forms as shifting, unstable entities. By focusing on the transformation of matter, Matta captures a sense of constant flux, characteristic of his broader body of work from the late 1930s.
