A detailed sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting military artillery alongside elaborate heraldic crests and inscriptions.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg captures the military technology and heraldic traditions of the early sixteenth century. The composition presents a row of heavy artillery pieces, specifically cannons and a mortar, arranged with precision. Each carriage displays decorative elements, including lion-head motifs, which reflect the period's tendency to ornament functional military equipment. The presence of cannonballs on the ground adds a sense of readiness to the scene.
Above the artillery, the print features three distinct heraldic shields. These are framed by elaborate cartouches and scrollwork, typical of the Northern Renaissance style. The central cartouche contains a French inscription detailing royal lineages, connecting the military display to the political power of the era. The inclusion of the Latin phrase 'Machinae Bellicae' identifies the subject matter clearly for the contemporary viewer, categorising the work as a record of martial engineering.
Nicolaas Hogenberg, active in the Low Countries, was known for his documentation of historical events and processions. His work often bridges the gap between technical illustration and artistic documentation. The fine line quality of the etching allows for the clear depiction of the mechanical parts of the cannons, from the wooden wheels to the iron barrels. This print serves as a visual record of the weaponry used during the reign of Emperor Charles V. The balance between the rigid, geometric forms of the artillery and the fluid, decorative lines of the heraldic crests creates a visual contrast that defines the aesthetic of the period. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of statecraft, genealogy, and military advancement in the sixteenth century.
