A striking early work by Auguste Herbin, featuring a rhythmic row of poplars reflected in water, rendered with the bold colour and expressive brushwork of the Fauvist movement.
This work by Auguste Herbin captures a rural scene defined by a rhythmic arrangement of trees and their reflection in a still body of water. Painted during the early years of the twentieth century, the composition reflects the influence of Fauvism, a movement that prioritised expressive colour and bold brushwork over traditional representation. Herbin employs a palette of warm ochres, deep browns, and cool blues to construct the scene, creating a contrast between the solid forms of the poplars and the fragmented, rippling reflections on the water surface.
The trees are rendered with thick, deliberate strokes, their verticality providing a structural counterpoint to the horizontal sweep of the bank and the sky. The sky itself is painted in a pale, luminous yellow, suggesting the light of late afternoon or early morning. Herbin avoids fine detail, opting instead for simplified shapes that communicate the essence of the environment. The buildings on the right are reduced to dark, geometric silhouettes, grounding the composition without distracting from the primary focus on the trees and the water.
Herbin was associated with the avant-garde circles in Paris during this period, and his work from these years demonstrates an interest in the decorative potential of colour. The application of paint is heavy and tactile, with visible brush marks that animate the surface of the canvas. This piece offers a view into the artist's early experimentation with form and colour before he moved towards the geometric abstraction for which he became known later in his career. It remains a clear example of the transition from late nineteenth-century traditions to the modern styles that defined the early twentieth century.
