A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, featuring a serene view of Lake Suwa with Mount Fuji visible in the distance.
Lake Suwa in Shinano Province is a woodblock print from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Katsushika Hokusai produced this collection during the Edo period, a time when travel within Japan became increasingly popular among the merchant class. The print depicts a serene view of the lake, with the distant peak of Mount Fuji visible on the horizon.
In the foreground, a small thatched-roof hut sits upon a rocky outcrop, framed by two tall, gnarled trees. The composition uses a clear division between the immediate surroundings and the expansive water, creating a sense of distance. A solitary boat glides across the calm surface, adding a human element to the quiet scene. Hokusai employs a limited palette, relying on shades of blue and soft earth tones to convey the atmosphere of the region.
The use of Prussian blue, a pigment imported from Europe, allowed Hokusai to achieve the deep tones seen in the sky and the water. This print demonstrates the technical skill involved in the ukiyo-e process, where multiple carved blocks were used to build the image layer by layer. The precision of the lines and the balance of the composition reflect the artist's mastery of the medium.
This work provides a glimpse into the geography of Shinano Province as perceived by travellers of the nineteenth century. It remains a representative example of the series, which sought to capture the mountain from various angles and seasons. The print is a study in perspective and colour, showing how Hokusai manipulated space to guide the viewer's eye across the scene. The inclusion of the hut and the trees provides a sense of scale, contrasting the small human dwelling with the vastness of the natural environment.
