A reproduction of Gustav Klimt's final Faculty Painting, depicting a complex allegorical scene of law and human suffering.
Jurisprudence is one of the three Faculty Paintings commissioned by the University of Vienna in 1894. Klimt completed the work between 1903 and 1907. The composition depicts a condemned man surrounded by three female figures, while a sea monster looms in the foreground. Above this scene, three female deities represent Law, Justice, and Truth. The painting reflects the tension between the rational nature of legal systems and the irrational, often dark, impulses of human existence.
The visual language employed here is characteristic of Klimt's mature period. He uses a monochromatic palette to emphasise the psychological weight of the subject. The figures are rendered with a blend of anatomical precision and decorative abstraction. The sea monster, covered in circular patterns, creates a stark contrast against the pale, elongated bodies of the women. The background is filled with dark, swirling forms that suggest an abyss, pulling the viewer into a state of unease.
This work caused significant controversy upon its unveiling. The university faculty rejected the paintings, citing their lack of clarity and their departure from traditional academic representation. Klimt eventually bought back the commissions, and they remained in his possession. The original canvas was destroyed by fire in 1945 at Schloss Immendorf. This print is based on the final state of the composition, capturing the haunting atmosphere and the precise, linear quality of Klimt's draughtsmanship. It serves as a record of a period when the artist moved away from public commissions to focus on personal, symbolic themes.
