A delicate etching by James McNeill Whistler, capturing the quietude of the River Thames with precise line work and atmospheric shadow.
Hurlingham is an etching and drypoint by James McNeill Whistler, produced during his time in London. The work depicts a scene along the River Thames, capturing the quiet atmosphere of the riverbank near the Hurlingham Club. Whistler employs a delicate, economical line to define the forms of the moored barges and the distant shoreline. The sails of the boats are rendered with denser cross-hatching, providing a visual weight that contrasts with the sparse, open space of the water and sky.
Whistler was a master of the etching medium, often using it to explore the atmospheric qualities of the Thames. In this print, the reflection of the boats in the water is achieved through subtle, horizontal strokes, suggesting the gentle movement of the tide. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the masts anchored by the horizontal expanse of the river. The artist's butterfly monogram is visible in the lower left corner, a signature mark he adopted to unify his identity across his various works.
This print reflects Whistler's interest in the everyday life of the river, moving away from the industrial focus of his earlier Thames sets toward a more contemplative, tonal approach. The paper retains a sense of texture, typical of the high-quality materials Whistler favoured for his editions. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he directs the viewer's attention to the interplay of light and shadow on the water's surface. This piece offers a glimpse into the late nineteenth-century riverfront, presented with the technical precision and artistic restraint that define Whistler's graphic output.
