A detailed depiction of a Parisian social gathering in 1885, capturing the fashion and atmosphere of the Belle Époque elite.
Julius LeBlanc Stewart, an American expatriate painter based in Paris, produced A Hunt Ball in 1885. This work captures the social atmosphere of the Parisian elite during the late nineteenth century. The scene depicts a crowded ballroom, filled with figures in formal evening attire. Women wear voluminous gowns, while men are dressed in tailcoats and military uniforms. The composition focuses on the interactions between the guests, with couples dancing and others engaged in conversation.
Stewart was known for his ability to document the habits of the wealthy classes. His technical approach involves a precise rendering of textures, from the silk and lace of the dresses to the polished surfaces of the room. The lighting, provided by chandeliers and wall sconces, creates a soft glow across the figures, allowing for subtle variations in tone. The arrangement of the crowd suggests a sense of movement, as the eye travels across the room from the foreground figures to the dancers in the middle distance.
This painting provides a view into the social rituals of the period. The artist avoids moralising or caricature, choosing instead to present the scene with a degree of objectivity. The scale of the work and the attention to detail reflect the standards of the Paris Salon, where Stewart exhibited regularly. By focusing on the specific fashions and social codes of the time, the artist creates a record of a particular stratum of society. The work remains a representative example of the genre painting popularised by artists who moved between the United States and France during this era.
