A colourful, expressionist depiction of an urban environment, featuring the signature spirals and organic architectural forms of Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
992 City View is a characteristic example of the later work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The composition rejects traditional linear perspective, opting instead for a flattened, dreamlike arrangement of architectural forms. Hundertwasser fills the canvas with his signature spiral motifs and organic shapes, which replace the rigid geometry typically associated with urban environments. The windows, often depicted as individualised units, appear to float across the surface, suggesting a human-centric approach to building design.
The colour palette is saturated, featuring high-contrast pairings of yellow, green, and deep blue. These hues are applied with a focus on decorative surface quality, where the paint texture remains visible. The artist avoids straight lines, preferring wobbly, hand-drawn contours that reflect his philosophy of the 'tyranny of the straight line'. This work communicates a vision of a city that exists in harmony with nature, where structures are not merely functional containers but extensions of the individual inhabitant.
By layering patterns and textures, Hundertwasser creates a sense of visual density. The work functions as a critique of modern industrial architecture, proposing a more whimsical and colourful alternative. The absence of a single vanishing point allows the viewer to scan the image freely, discovering small details within the repetitive window patterns and swirling forms. This print captures the specific energy of Hundertwasser's later period, where his environmental concerns and artistic style merged into a singular, recognisable visual language.
