A 1967 lithograph by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, featuring his signature organic lines, bold colours, and symbolic imagery of a journey.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser, born Friedrich Stowasser, was an Austrian artist known for his rejection of the straight line and his embrace of organic, irregular forms. In '626 The Way to You', created in 1967, the artist employs his characteristic visual language to explore themes of travel, connection, and the human experience. The composition is dominated by a central, converging perspective that draws the eye toward a distant, circular sun or celestial body. This path, rendered in bold, saturated reds, suggests a journey through a terrain defined by rhythmic, undulating lines.
The foreground features a stylised hand, a recurring motif in Hundertwasser's work, which provides a personal, human anchor to the abstract surroundings. The use of colour is deliberate and intense, with contrasting yellows, oranges, and deep blacks creating a sense of movement and energy. The sky is depicted with concentric, wave-like bands, reinforcing the artist's fascination with natural cycles and the rejection of rigid, industrial geometry.
Technically, the work demonstrates Hundertwasser's mastery of printmaking. The application of ink creates a tactile quality, where the lines appear to vibrate against the paper. The imagery avoids traditional representation, opting instead for a symbolic interpretation of the world. By focusing on the interplay between the individual and the environment, the artist invites the viewer to consider their own path. This piece is representative of his mid-career output, where he moved away from conventional painting techniques to experiment with mixed media and print processes. The work remains a clear example of his philosophy, which prioritised the individual's creative spirit over the uniformity of modern society. Through his use of colour and form, Hundertwasser creates a visual narrative that is both personal and universal.
