A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, capturing travellers resting in a teahouse with a view of Mount Fuji.
This woodblock print is a plate from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a collection that redefined the possibilities of the genre. Hokusai depicts a teahouse at Yoshida, a station along the Tokaido road, which was the primary route connecting Edo and Kyoto. The composition is structured around the architectural frame of the teahouse, which acts as a window onto the distant, snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji.
Inside the structure, travellers rest from their journey. Hokusai captures a quiet, observational moment: figures sit on the raised floor, some conversing while others recline. A woman gestures towards the mountain, drawing the viewer's eye to the distant horizon. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become available in Japan, provides the deep tones of the sky and the garments of the figures. This colour choice creates a sense of atmospheric depth that contrasts with the pale, neutral tones of the wooden interior.
The print demonstrates Hokusai's ability to balance human activity with the natural world. The teahouse is not merely a setting for the figures, but a framing device that emphasises the presence of the mountain in the daily lives of those travelling the Tokaido. The clean lines and clear spatial organisation are characteristic of Hokusai's mature style, where he moved away from the crowded compositions of his earlier work towards a more disciplined, graphic approach. The inclusion of text, such as the sign hanging on the right and the title cartouche, integrates the graphic design of the print with the narrative content. This work remains a clear example of the technical precision achieved by the carvers and printers who collaborated with Hokusai to produce these editions.
