A woodblock print by Shōtei Hokuju depicting the Ryogoku Bridge in Edo, featuring early experiments with Western-style perspective.
Shōtei Hokuju, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, produced this woodblock print during the early nineteenth century. The composition captures the bustling atmosphere surrounding the Ryogoku Bridge in Edo, now Tokyo. The bridge, a prominent arched wooden structure, dominates the right side of the frame, connecting the busy riverbank to the opposite shore. Small figures traverse the bridge, while others congregate near the stalls and buildings at the water's edge.
Hokuju employs a distinct approach to perspective, influenced by Western copperplate engravings that reached Japan via Dutch traders. This is visible in the treatment of the bridge and the architectural elements, which possess a sense of depth unusual for the period. The Sumida River flows horizontally across the lower half of the image, populated by small boats and vessels. The sky occupies a large portion of the print, featuring stylised clouds that provide a sense of scale and atmosphere. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on shades of blue, soft ochre, and muted earth tones to define the water, sky, and wooden structures.
This print belongs to a series of works depicting famous locations in the Eastern Capital. Hokuju is known for his interest in geometric precision and the application of linear perspective to traditional Japanese subjects. The print offers a view into the daily life of Edo, documenting the interaction between the urban population and the river that defined the city's geography. The work remains a clear example of the experimentation occurring within the Ukiyo-e school as artists began to integrate foreign techniques into their practice. The print is preserved in several major museum collections, where it is studied for its technical departure from the flatter, more decorative styles of contemporary printmakers.
